Supporting Victim/Survivors Facing Eviction
Presented by: Raelene Caswell and Ann McFarland

Safe and stable housing is crucial for preventing domestic and sexual violence. Now that the COVID-19 eviction protections have come to an end, the number of eviction filings are close to pre-pandemic levels. Unfortunately, many tenants who are victim/survivors of domestic or sexual violence are unaware of state and federal laws that may protect them from being evicted.  In this training, we will discuss the eviction process in Minnesota, legal defenses for victim/survivors, and the role advocates can play in supporting victim/survivors who are facing eviction.

Contextualizing the Refugee Experience through a Domestic and Sexual Violence Lens
Presented by: Rachel Kohler and Nikki Kelly

Conflict, warfare, and natural disaster cause large-scale displacement of people every year, as we have seen most recently in Ukraine and Afghanistan. In addition to the violence they are escaping, international relocation often makes refugees vulnerable to further violence. Contextualizing the current refugee crisis requires a deeper understanding of the events and structures that produce such a crisis as well as an understanding of the trauma refugees are left to carry. The presenters will provide an overview of the U.S. laws related to refugees; resettlement in the United States; the intersection of displacement with domestic and sexual violence, including the psychological impact of displacement and continued trauma; immigration relief options for displaced people; and how domestic and sexual violence advocates can best support refugees in their communities.

Technology: Strategies for Advocates to Support Survivors
Presented by: Thi Synavone

Technology is a necessity in everyday life.  Technology can be empowering and offer tools for survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, and/or trafficking to access help, maintain safety and privacy, and be connected to family and friends.  Technology can also be misused by perpetrators to control, generate fear, threaten, and monitor survivors.  This training will give advocates an understanding of how technology can be misused, strategies to support survivors with safety planning and resources, and empower survivors around tech.  This training is appropriate for advocates with all levels of technological proficiency.
